It’s November already, a busy month in the calendar, but one when we traditionally recognise Remembrance Sunday, Armistice Day, World Diabetes Day, Bonfire night, Children in Need, Road Safety Week and of course Black Friday and Cyber Monday. But this month, we’re braced for another lockdown which means many of these events will be quite different this year.

The nation is feeling concern for those vulnerable members of society and the NHS is preparing for a surge in hospital admissions and our key workers, especially you, our drivers, are gearing up to go into overdrive in the run up to Christmas. So it’s worth remembering that, while we are not all in the same boat, we are in the same storm and we are all in this together - we have survived it once and we will survive it again.

As drivers you are, as ever, vital to keeping the country moving. And our teams in our branches are working tirelessly to keep the shifts coming in and to bring on new business as demand for drivers increases. So please remember to keep us updated and aware of your availability so we can place you efficiently in work.

We continue to run the Refer-A-Friend scheme with the opportunity to earn yourself an additional £100 in your wages for every HGV driver referred* What a great way to increase your earnings just before Christmas!

Contact your branch or go to https://driverrequire.co.uk/drivers/refer-a-friend

Driver Require continues to operate at full speed during this busy period and our offices are open as usual during this second lockdown. However, in line with government restrictions and in order to maintain the safety of all our staff and drivers, please only visit our offices if you have an appointment.
Contact us at any time by phone, text or email.

Our Tamworth office has put nominated Barry Fox as our October Driver of the Month. "Over the past few months, he has moved from client to client, helping us out at the drop of a hat. He will do any start time, any day, reduce his rest and we think he deserves a BIG thank you."

Our Tamworth team also quoted a few interesting facts about Barry....

"
He is an HGV1 driver.
He used to drive gig trucks for Foo Fighters and Lady Gaga.
He was a punk rock guitarist way back in the day.

Has worked in all of our main clients in Tamworth, including Ocado and Guinan Girls.
He is a legend!!"

Thank you Barry, from us all at Driver Require, you're a huge asset to our team.

Retailers are expecting this Black Friday to be very different and very digital
Many companies are positioning themselves to benefit from a predominantly online Black Friday and have already made preparations including:
  • Amazon’s recent and great expansion of all its logistics from warehouses to workforce.
  • DHL’s purchase of aircraft to empower its cargo service.
  • Google Cloud increasing servers to ensure uninterrupted online shopping for their e-commerce partners.
  • Many retailers are hinting at an extended Q4 sales period to bring more customers online where it’s safe to shop and to avoid a sudden surge in online orders and the logistic chaos which is likely to follow.

So, one thing that is certain amongst all the uncertainty is that there will be more online shoppers this Black Friday.

R
esearch from Whistl showed that nearly half of Christmas shoppers (46%) are aiming to increase their online spending activities during the festive season and up to 44% of fashion sales will switch to online.

GIVING THANKS TO OUR DRIVERS....
National Lorry Week, now in its sixth year,  celebrates the vital and often-overlooked role the road transport industry has in our everyday lives. It runs from 16 to 22 November but the RHA has launched its activities much earlier this year to make sure that  National Lorry Week 2020 is bigger and better than ever before.

The RHA is asking as many people as possible to show their appreciation for the sector, the companies and workforce responsible for delivering 98% of our essential consumer goods such as food, medicine and more.

COVID19 has seen the industry work even harder with operators and drivers going the extra mile to make sure that supermarket shelves are stocked and the thousands of carers and NHS frontline staff are equipped with the all-important PPE.

The UK logistics industry does an outstanding job, keeping the country fed, safe and moving.

National Lorry Week provides the perfect opportunity for the nation to say ‘thank you’ to these unsung haulage heroes.

On Thursday 19 November at 8pm we want you to Shine A Light for the logistics industry – for the truck drivers, warehouse staff, managers, technicians, mechanics, fitters etc. The ones that keep this great industry on the road.

Please do all you can to spread the word. Whether you shine a light on your building with your workforce or stand on your doorstep with your family and a torch.

Wherever you are, shine a light to say thank you.

Driver Require will be promoting this on our social media channels. Check out the events that will be running - there's something for everyone! Click here to find out more.

11 NOVEMBER is Remembrance Day and we will be championing this appeal as proud supporters of the Armed Forces Covenant.

Like so many things this year, the Poppy Appeal has to adapt to the threat of Covid-19 and as a result of the pandemic, many of The Legion's volunteers are unable to help at this year's Poppy Appeal. Therefore, the Royal British Legion are asking the public for their support like never before, because every poppy counts.

The Legion has worked with its members, staff, volunteers and partners to create a range of ways for people to get a poppy and show your support in 2020. From donating for poppies through the post for your neighbours and local community, displaying a poppy in your window, donating online or undertaking a virtual Poppy run, there are many ways to support the Poppy Appeal from home in line with Covid-19 restrictions, so that we can continue to support our Armed Forces community in their time of need, ensuring their unique contribution is never forgotten.

You can also download and print the Legion's iconic Remembrance Poppy to display at home and show your support for our Armed Forces. Poppy Download | Poppy to Colour-in Download

"We are facing the greatest test of our mental health this year."

As we enter a second lockdown this winter, the prospect of a looming mental health emergency is almost impossible to ignore.

Paul Farmer, chief executive of mental health charity Mind, says it could be "the greatest test of our mental health this year”, not just for the public but for healthcare staff who are "working tirelessly, but may be struggling with their mental health too”.
Both Mind and Carers UK say the Government has to learn from mistakes in the first wave and make sure people can get help early on.

Mind has also urged the Government to support those who feel alone through a second lockdown in England, with Mr Farmer saying “There is an urgent need for a Winter Mental Health Support Package now from the Government. This must include access to face to face and online mental health services for those who need it. And this time round we need to pay particular attention to people with serious mental health problems at risk of imminent crisis, as well as the wider challenges of the pandemic on the general public’s mental health.
Charity chiefs have urged the Government to learn from mistakes in the first wave to make sure those struggling during the second lockdown can get help early on.
